03:44:06saratoga_we need a support channel
03:44:58MarcGuayx2
03:46:19scorche|shwell, we are going to talk about it :)
03:46:41scorche|shalthough i do know there are people both for and against
03:48:16MU{lappy}does "developers talk here, users talk here, users needing help talk here" work for *any* project?
03:48:27MarcGuayscorche: I wonder if it'll cause a lot of people to just ignore it.
03:48:41MU{lappy}mplayer and mythtv certainly get their share of user questions on the dev-only mail lists
03:49:04scorche|shMarcGuay: i knwo a few who would skip the support/general channel and join only the dev channel if this were to go through
03:49:13scorche|shbut i am interested to see how the talks come out
03:49:29scorche|shi tried for this...a year or so ago?
03:49:36scorche|shmaybe less
03:50:06MarcGuayIt seems that here the anger inspires people to help, and get rid of people and their problems, faster.
03:50:16MarcGuayHard to say.
03:52:08MarcGuayI think the strong argument is that it's a waste of time, energy, and space to have logs of support questions.
03:52:38saratoga_i just want support unlogged
03:53:01saratoga_and anyway, developers don't contribute a huge amount of support anyway, there seems to be a second group which does only a little development but a lot of support
03:53:59saratoga_so i don't see it as a huge hindrance that support isn't logged
03:54:00 Nick fxb is now known as fxb__ (n=felixbru@h1252615.stratoserver.net)
03:54:11saratoga_someone will just post it to the dev channel if its important anyway
03:54:47scorche|shwell, part of it is that some people think that one more channel is a hassle and the "support channel" would be a nice easy one to drop
03:55:07scorche|shthe issue is that it can have a separation and developers may not be aware of some issues as much as they would

03:56:13SynthrebeHow do i find out when sansa e series of players are V1 or V2 when buying?
03:56:39Synthrebecause i definately don't wanna get V2 , its incompatible with everything.
03:56:47saratoga_check the firmware version
03:57:04saratoga_i don't see how having more then one channel is a hassle
03:57:10saratoga_if you don't like it, just don't read it problem solved
03:57:41Synthrebei mean when its for sale on the net
03:57:47saratoga_and anyway, given that rockbox-community has people in it, theres obviously plenty who don't mind
03:57:48Synthrebeon sites etc
03:57:51saratoga_you can't
03:58:23Synthrebeyea but rockbox aint gonna be made anytime in near future for that sansa
03:58:34MU{lappy}if it's not new, you could ask the seller
03:58:52Synthrebeokay what versions are v1?
03:59:42MarcGuaySynthrebe: They start with v1.

04:00:16MarcGuaysaratoga_: This is good fodder for your position.

04:02:30saratoga_not to mention that guy who came in, asked about the wma codec for use on some embedded system, and missed my reply under a birrage of CF replacement crap that was interesting to exactly 1 person
04:02:39saratoga_never saw him again
04:03:04Synthrebeyou know about sansalinux?
04:03:16saratoga_sure but this isn't the place to talk about it

04:03:30Synthrebeahh #sansalinux?
04:03:51scorche|shSynthrebe: this is #rockbox...for talking about (surprisingly): rockbox
04:03:56*wpyh thinks CF replacement is not crap
04:04:18Synthrebeso why did sandisk make this update to sansa players?
04:04:30Synthrebei mean plenty got their players for rockbox
04:04:49phixxorhey this isn't exactly rockbox related, but I'd like to get a digital audio player similar to the iriver h100 series that might be supported by rockbox in the future
04:04:57phixxorthe h100s are just too hard to come by
04:05:53phixxormost important part is all the inputs and outputs for recording and connecting to different sound systems
04:06:11saratoga_if that means digital in, I don't think any such player exists
04:06:34saratoga_sandisk probably released the V2 because the CPUs in the V1 were apparently discontinued
04:06:48phixxorwell digital in wouldn't be too useful
04:06:52phixxorbut digital out is
04:07:09phixxorand mic inputs would be great for speech recording
04:07:09saratoga_i don't think theres any upcoming players with that
04:07:18phixxor:(
04:07:21MarcGuayphixxor: I see them on eBay all the time.

04:07:57Synthrebesansa view seems cool

04:08:27MU{lappy}you could try to add USB audio support to one of the players w/ USB OTG hardware :/

04:08:52phixxor(if there's a guide I'll read it to save you some trouble)
04:09:11saratoga_i guess you send PCM over the USB interface
04:09:29phixxorthat actually sounds really good
04:09:39phixxorand I could use any rockbox compatible player
04:09:42MU{lappy}i mean, some newer hardware has support for acting as a USB host. you could plug a USB soundcard into one of those, if you teach rockbox to talk to a USB soundcard first.
04:09:45MU{lappy}not *any*.
04:10:59MarcGuayphixxor: Do you live in the US?
04:11:03phixxoryea

04:12:13MU{lappy}i don't think rockbox has the ability to do *anything* w/ usb host hardware right now, correct?
04:12:13phixxorthanks :)
04:12:42phixxorhmm
04:13:01phixxorso I wouldn't be able to plug the usb cord into something, press play, and expect to hear music?
04:13:08saratoga_not without writing a driver

04:13:53phixxorhmm
04:14:15saratoga_and pretty much that would mean a gigabeat S right now, since its the only device with which we have any real software USB support

04:14:31Synthrebemaybe use old driver if some hardware is the same?
04:14:50saratoga_well the problem with that is that we've never written a driver, so we have no old ones
04:15:09Synthrebesansa's own then?
04:15:25saratoga_wait what are you asking?
04:15:43Synthrebesay u take usb driver from v1 for sansa firmware
04:15:45Synthrebeput in v2
04:15:56Synthrebefile transfer possibility
04:16:10saratoga_if they used the same hardware, and you wrote a V1 driver that worked, that could be an option
04:16:26Synthreberip the old one?
04:16:43saratoga_well, given that it doesn't work at the moment, thats probably not the best option
04:16:54phixxorhmm I've read that people are able to connect their ipods to some car stereo systems through usb −− is that theoretically possible with rockbox so I could use flacs?
04:17:01saratoga_though I guess whatever issue it has might be specific to the PP CPUs, and not AMS
04:17:20saratoga_i think all that does is mount the device as a UMS disk
04:17:31saratoga_so if your stereo plays flac, probably
04:17:39phixxorah
04:17:47phixxormost car stereos don't
04:18:00phixxorsigh this is why the aux out - aux in solution sounded the best to me
04:18:19saratoga_all rockbox targets can do AUX
04:18:23Synthrebeahh u guys tried already
04:18:31saratoga_though some only through the headphone jack on some
04:18:32phixxoryeah that's the good news
04:18:46phixxorbut not all daps have digital out
04:18:53phixxorand that's what I want to use if possible
04:18:54saratoga_AUX isn't digital, but yeah

04:22:08MU{lappy}phixxor: a lot of people listen to their DAP on headphones. you often get AUX, digital, etc, on a dock, special cable, or not at all.
04:22:21MU{lappy}you could get one that can play files from a USB MSC device.
04:22:35MU{lappy}that's getting even more offtopic though.
04:23:55phixxorso my choices at this point are get a car stereo syste that reads flacs from a USB MSC device or one that has S/PDIF

06:04:14MU{lappy}would any dev care to say whether a plugin or a codec would be more appropriate for sbagen? the files are essentially scripts for generating audio, they don't necessarily have a fixed runtime, and they may describe the audio to generate in terms of current wall-clock time rather than playback position. probably plugin?
06:20:26saratoga_i think codecs are supposed to have fixed runtime, so plugin would be my guess
06:20:46saratoga_theres really no way to figure out how long the script is without decoding it? seems like something that would go into a header
06:23:40MU{lappy}saratoga_: that's not the issue, the issue is that the script might not *have* an end-time.
06:23:43sarixeany progress on porting to ipod classic?
06:23:53MU{lappy}ie, it can be intended to run until you stop it.
06:24:18saratoga_the mod codec is like that too i think
06:24:25saratoga_i believe the decoder just ignores loops
06:24:41saratoga_sarixe: see the forums thread
06:24:50sarixelink?
06:24:50BHSPitLappyalso the vgm plugins
06:25:06MU{lappy}the other issue is that, as i said, it might be wall-time based, rather than playback-position based
06:25:08BHSPitLappysarixe, search? :/
06:25:17sarixeO.o alright...
06:25:23saratoga_i don't have the link memorized
06:25:25MU{lappy}ie, script might be "what to play at 1pm, what to play at 2pm(...)"
06:25:37saratoga_ah
06:25:39MU{lappy}so, plugin, then, eh?
06:25:42saratoga_yeah that sounds more like a plugin
06:26:59MU{lappy}there's also the issue that a script *can* specify a wav or vorbis file to mix in, and that sbagen uses those in ways other than play-straight-through
06:27:24saratoga_plugins can invoke codecs, the test_codec plugin does that
06:27:51saratoga_though i don't know how much of the playback engine they can actually touch
06:28:04MU{lappy}yeah, i think i might need to link tremor in for this
06:28:37MU{lappy}is slices and crossfades segments of the specified file at random to create something continuous - think background noise, basically.
06:29:16MU{lappy}like i said, i'd probably port w/o the mixfile feature to start w/ :/
06:29:44saratoga_as long as you only need to decode one file at a time, you can probably make do with codecs
06:31:27MU{lappy}i'll need to be able to get the decoded audio for an arbitrary segment of the file in a buffer, basically. i'll poke around the wiki, i guess, when i have time to start.

14:02:17GodEaterbut currently the menu's display is toggled, rather than only displaying while you hold down the key to bring it up
14:02:25*GodEater wonders if this explanation makes any sense
14:02:52GodEaterso you need a key to dismiss it too, if you don't want to change any of the options after all
14:03:18GodEaterat least, that's what I recall as being the reason it works the way it does
14:04:15shotofaddswhat's currently happening is that I hold down a 'touchscreen button' (top right of the screen) to bring up the quickscreen. I can then press right or down to toggle those options, and the screen exits. But if I press left, it says "OK" instead of toggling Shuffle.
14:04:23shotofaddsI probably wasn't very clear originally...
14:05:24shotofaddsbtw. I think the 'toggled' display will have to stay on touchsreen targets... until we invent software multitouch :p
