#rockbox log for 2009-04-28

00:02:43 Quit jgarvey ("Leaving")
00:03:58dfkti just converted two guinea pigs, err, friends to rockbox... they were so kind as to test my fuze compile :)
00:04:26dfktnow they can't believe what they missed with the OF

00:07:45froggymanis it possible to install rockbox on an iPod 4th gen (not nano) without the administrator password?
00:10:03JdGordon|depends how much effort you want to put into it
00:10:46JdGordon|you could download a linux boot cd and run rbutil inside that, then you wont need the password
00:14:13froggymanthats what i thought, because i have a friend who isnt an admin on his computer and wants to give it a try, but i will just install it for him then. I thought about giving him one of my live CDs but he really isnt that great with computers and i didnt want to confuse hime
00:14:52evilnick_7Not an admin on his _own_ computer?
00:15:31froggymanwell, its his dads and well he isnt "trusted" as admin on it
00:16:10evilnick_7Gotchya
00:24:38EternalRainscan you make an advanced custom livecd that will automatically do detection, rbutil, and all?
00:25:26evilnick_7EternalRains: How many people who want to use Rockbox wouldn't have admin rights on their own PC though?
00:26:13EternalRainsbut it would be awesome to have a crazy livecd that would do it all :)
00:26:20*EternalRains sets to work
00:26:27EternalRainsargh, windows
00:27:10evilnick_7Don't get me wrong, I like the idea but I'm not sure how useful it'd be

09:10:31kugelnot from what I've "messured"
09:10:58amiconnIt does. Simply subtracting n ticks after sleeping n ticks assumes that all threads always yield immediately
09:11:20 Quit intrados (SendQ exceeded)
09:11:49amiconnYou'll probably not notice when testing unless you cause heavy load (preferably by plugins not yielding often)
09:12:19kugelthen fix it there
09:13:26kugelthat's no reason to run code 100 times a second when it needs to be run per second only (not even that sometimes)

09:14:09amiconnI didn't say that the timing can't be handled in a thread instead of a tick task. Just the way the calculation is done leads to loss of precision
09:14:43 Quit intrados (SendQ exceeded)
09:15:45kugelI've been testing with current_tick - last_tick, that didn't work any better (less actually, it happened to be 99 at times

09:17:47kugeland this means (if it happens only once) that the timeout will be less than zero 1 second later
09:17:51amiconnI'd calculate the tick when backlight needs to shut off, and then use TIME_AFTER() to check for it
09:18:39amiconnThis may need special cases for always-on and always-off though
09:19:12kugelTIME_AFTER can't handle equality though

09:20:37kugelalways-on and always-off are special cases already anyway
09:21:01amiconnWhy would it need to handle equality?
09:22:08RevengerI couldn't find anywhere on the rockbox site to add a feature request it is that the utility should check for a new version of itself on load and also in about there should be a check for update link
09:22:11kugelwhen the timeout is say 8 seconds, then you want backlight to go off in the 8th call (not in the 9th, since TIME_AFTER would be true in the 9th one, in the 8th one the difference is 0)

09:23:58amiconnkugel: If you're really into *that* tiny difference, then calculate backlight_off_tick - 1. It wouöd still be more reliable than the current code
09:24:17amiconnThe current code might easily cause a set timeout of say, 10 seconds to become 15 or even more
09:24:29kugeland I've noticed that the timeout isn't always 100% precise (sometimes 99 ticks, sometimes 101) that's why I did substract the constant
09:24:53kugelthen fix the yielding of the code that doesn't do it on load

09:26:56amiconnsleep(HZ) never guarantees that the thread wakes up after exactly HZ ticks. All it guarantees is that it sleeps for *at least* HZ ticks
09:27:07amiconnThe wakeup happens after the next yield-around
09:27:34amiconnAnd there is code that cannot yield for noticeable amounts of time, e.g. MAS i2c communication
09:28:06amiconn(well, actually it yields when waiting for the slowish ACK)
09:28:47amiconnAnyway, relying on behaviour that's not guaranteet is bad imo
09:29:19kugelI'll look into it

13:45:51Bagderthere's nobody working on it since the problem is hard as a steel wall
13:46:36arpai've been following lots of console hacking scene and i know PS3 isn't cracked because there's not much interest in that machine. Xbox360 (newer models) aren't hackable because they are built like undestroyable fortress (or steel wall like you said). :)
13:47:16arpai wonder how people jailbreak iPhone, but can't get 2nd gen Nano to work :(
13:47:46Bagderwell, quite simply because they have more people on the problem, and I believe they are also easier to poke on
13:49:34arpai just love Rockbox :) especially the .SID playing capabilities are nice.
