10:05:56n1samiconn, saratoga: the Beast's dynamic freq/voltage scaling uses some hardware functions in the SoC that measure the load somehow and fires interrupts at preset limits IIUC
10:07:33n1son some targets (like the coldfire ones) the normal clock is pretty high and a dynamic system could allow us to lower that which could save power when playing back fast formats
10:09:58n1sAlso there's Zagor's patch that made the actual freq switching faster but with a bit lower max clock, i wonder if he's going anywhere with that...
10:11:05S_a_i_n_tn1s: FS#?
10:12:33Zagorn1s: I spent quite a lot of time trying to gain average clock by using a lower clock and doing more dynamic switching. unfortunately my results were not that encouraging.
10:13:13Zagorbasically I ended up adding a lot of complexity for very little power gain
10:14:29S_a_i_n_thow very little is "very little" exactly?
10:15:16Zagora don't remember exactly. on the order of a handful megahertz average clock for 128 kbit mp3 playback.
10:16:03S_a_i_n_tDid it add anything substantial to binsize?
10:16:22Zagorno
10:16:32S_a_i_n_tI'm all for adding power saving features if they don't impact negatively anywhere else.
10:16:52S_a_i_n_tevery little bit helps.
10:17:44Zagoryes, but this method is rather invasive. it requires a lot more fine-grained boost control all over the code.
10:17:48n1sZagor: ah
10:18:07n1sS_a_i_n_t: well "adding a lot of complexity for very little [] gain" is kind of negative ;)

10:19:00Zagorthe alternative is having a thread/irq which tries to observe the system and boost by demand. but that's tricky to get right.

10:19:47n1sZagor: i think that's what amiconn sugested here yesterday, to time how much the cpu is sleeping and adjust speed accordingly
10:20:27Zagoryes. I'd say it's worth experimenting with.
10:20:31S_a_i_n_tYes, there's been a lot of talk recently about handling boosting in a saner way.
10:20:55n1sit would be interesting to try using 33MHz normal frequency on coldfire
10:21:02S_a_i_n_thaving more controll, as opposed to just boost/unboost.
10:22:23n1sthe current way is very KISS though and works fairly well, it's just that it's suboptimal for targets where the performance/power consumption ratio is not linear with the speed
10:24:56Zagorin theory the normal frequency shouldn't matter as long as it's the same clock divider
10:25:10Zagorrunning more quickly just means we'll sleep sooner
10:25:36 Join user890104_ [0] (~Venci@212.233.239.19)
10:25:56n1sah, i thought the coldfires were fairly inefficient at sleeping
10:26:29Zagorwell, in that case it matters. :-) I meant more generally.
10:27:27Zagorin a simplified model where sleep = 1% power and normal = 100%, we could just as well run at full speed always
10:28:04n1sanecdotal evidence is linuxstb's battery bench comparing a stock build playing flac vs a custom build with normal clock at 34MHz and gaining ~1h10m runtime

10:44:36Zagorwell, if we can't make coldfire draw less idle power then certainly on-demand boosting is not usable there
