17:32:49SzeraaxHello, I'm trying to do the cross-compilers doc of building rb from my own source, and during the rockboxdev.sh script, I have been waiting for over an hour on the "checking for pstat_getstatic... " step of it. This step uses the gcc-3.exe in cygwin\bin (93kb) and has been chewing up a core of mine for the entire hour or so. Do I just need to wait longer, or am I hung somewhere likely?
17:34:54[Saint]CygWin is *sloooooooooooooooow*
17:35:27[Saint]To save pain and heartache, I highly reccommend using VirtualBox and a Linux distro
17:35:49[Saint]Unless you use CygWin for something else, it's really not worth the hassle.
17:37:06[Saint]You can probably set up VirtualBox/Ubuntu, download the sources, and have a build compiled twice in the time it takes to build the toolchains in CygWin
17:37:41 Quit markun_ (Quit: leaving)
17:37:52[Saint](to build all toolchains, you could be looking at up to 12 hours on a slower machine)
17:38:19SzeraaxHrmmm, that's depressing based on how much time I've put into cygwin thus far, haha.
17:38:32TorneSzeraax: If it's actually stopped in configure then that's broken
17:38:44Tornebut saint is also correct that cygwin is massively, massively slow
17:39:01Torneif it was *working* it would take a couple hours
17:39:11Torneyours sounds like it's busted.
17:39:43SzeraaxAnd how can I know if it is stopped or not? It has been on this one line for almost 1:30 at this point
17:40:01Torne..well that's how you know it's stopped.
17:40:06 Join wtachi [0] (~wtachi@65.190.12.236)
17:40:24Torne"checking for foo" is configure running
17:40:28SzeraaxAye... So I guess I get to kill the script and delete the build dir, and either run it again or do another approach, correct.
17:40:29Szeraax?
17:40:30Torneand each of those should take maybe two seconds
17:40:31Torneif that
17:40:36Torneeven on cygwin.
17:40:49TorneYeah, kill it, delete build dir and start over
17:40:51Szeraaxk, massive death then.
17:40:52TorneIdeally on Linux.
17:41:13Tornebut if you do do it on cygwin, it shouldn't stop without printing some kind of output for more than maybe 5-10 minutes, depending on the speed of your machine
17:41:32SzeraaxMuch appreciated for your help all
17:41:34Tornethe build porcess is very noisy so it would only stop while compiling very large files like the ARM backend, and even those are not so big as to take mroe than a couple minutes.
17:41:59Tornethe whole process will take an hour or five, but it will spam output pretty much the whole time :)

17:42:46Tornethat was fun.
17:43:07SzeraaxYa, that's kinda what I thought too, but I didn't want to just kill it, if it was actually doing something
17:43:15Torneright.
17:43:27TorneSo yeah, you may have to wait 5-10 minutes for it to visibly make progress on a few places.
17:43:31Tornebut not longer than that

17:44:33*Buschel also just switched from cygwin to VMPlayer
17:45:05Buschelsingle CPU -> factor 3 faster. quad CPU -> factor 6 faster
17:45:15Torneyah, that sounds reasonable :)
17:45:25*Torne hugs his 16 CPUs.
17:45:33Buschelbuilding the cross compilers is faaaar more than 6x faster
17:45:40Torneipodvideo build in 42 seconds ;)
17:45:50Torne(from scratch, no ccache)
17:46:32Buschelhehe, mine takes ~1:40h now. which is quite fast compared to what my old notebook neede dunder cygwin (~21min)
17:46:51TorneYah. There are diminishing returns :)
17:46:57Torneour build process doesn't go *that* parallel
17:47:05Torneand there are some slow steps like genlang
17:47:06*Buschel still fights with samba though
17:47:13Torne(which i hope to be able to speed up sometime soon)
17:48:32Buschelbut: anyone who wants to use VMPlayer -> make sure you use v3.0.0 latest. version newer than that do not support > 4 CPUs
17:49:18Buschel(or at least newer versions do not support hyperthreading on quad cores)
17:49:37Buschelit took me a week to find out...

23:33:25froggymanphilipballew, if you know how to program
23:33:27gevaertsThere are a number of plugins that come with rockbox. Note that we really use the term "plugin" to describe the technical way they work (i.e. pluggable code), not to imply that you can get them elsewhere
23:33:40froggymanThere is a guide on writing plugins on the wiki
23:34:25philipballewoh nice froggyman would i then compile everything myself i assume. ill look at the wiki
23:34:50froggymanphilipballew, Yes you can. The wiki has a lot of useful information
23:35:42evilnick_BAll plugins are built by default, i.e. when you install RB on your player, all available (and working) plugins are already there
