03:16:01[Saint]JdGordon: is there a reason other than overcomplication that submenus aren't configurable?
03:16:21[Saint](thinking from a ML thread)
03:17:56JdGordonother than that, umm.. its pointless
03:18:20JdGordoneverything you'd want from it can be acheived with shortcuts
03:18:31[Saint]My assumption is that it involves a shit-tonne more blocking and/or re-adding integral menu components.
03:18:49[Saint]And, not necessarily.
03:19:23 Join RoC_MasterMind [0] (
03:19:34[Saint]Id like to get rid of the shortcuts menu personally, then trim down a few menus similar to what I have in my own builds.
03:19:36JdGordonit would be a massive ton of work for very little actual gain
03:19:46JdGordonit comes down to this:
03:20:06 Quit ashi (Quit: Leaving)
03:20:17JdGordon1) if you think the menus are layed out bad you probably should reorder them for how you like it in a custom build (you meaning Random Joe)
03:20:30JdGordon2) if you want to reorder them for fast access to common items then use shortcuts
03:21:38[Saint]1 is usually was beyond Random Joe's ability, though. The people that want minimal menus are those with little to no coding chops whatsoever in my experience.
03:22:06JdGordonif there is enough call for a minimal menu then thats a different story
03:22:08[Saint]So a UI would be nice, preferably in RBUtil.
03:22:20JdGordonassuming that means just removing menu items without reordering
03:24:24*[Saint] actually talked briefly with bluebrother^ yesterday about a configuration editor for RBUtil, I should re-read that to see where it ended.
03:24:50JdGordonthat discussion has happenined a few times
03:25:11JdGordonstep 1: come up with a script to generate settings.ini from settings_list.c
03:25:11[Saint]I _think_ it was "possible, but no sane way to expose the available configuration items per target (as yet)"
03:26:06JdGordonI don't necessarily agree it needs to be target specific, it just needs to be pretty close, we can always hand modify the ini file later
03:28:10[Saint]It'd be nice if it were generated at build time and packaged in
03:28:49[Saint]Then RBUtil could just grab it from ./rockbox
03:29:23[Saint]And it'd even work (in theory) for custom builds with features chopped out.
03:34:59[Saint]Though I suppose that's bootloader really needed, as irrelevant configuration items will be ignored and trimmed from the config the next time its saved by the target.
03:35:13[Saint]*not really

20:41:57pixelmait was due to being stuck when rebooting into the OF, if I understand the question correctly
20:42:04bertrikWe fixed the unresponsive-after-panic on AMSv2 at some point, it was caused by turning off the ROM clock

21:00:06bertrikI thought so
21:00:50bertrikthe clipv2 does indeed put A7 (power) high for some time, in order to read back the hold state through A3

22:07:16azhagDethSone: you abviously forgot about emacs ;)
22:07:19DethSoneI relly do think that with a few tweaks and extras, RockBox could be the new Media Center OS on the block!
22:07:42gevaertsAdding decent video playback support and networking is *not* "a few tweaks and extras"
22:08:03scnot really the target for rockbox imo
22:08:04DethSonesemms like it to me
22:08:14gevaertsOK. Come back next week with patches then
22:10:17DethSonewhat the hell is wrong with you guys!?!, I'm no dev, I can't program 'n' stuff, but as a qualified IT Technician, I really do think a RockBox OS would be entirely possible, and would be brilliant!, so long as it's kept separate from the RockBox Firmware project of-course.
22:11:01gevaertsWhat's wrong with us is that we suffer from a lack of cluelessness
22:11:32gevaertsI mean, seriously, if you're not familiar with how rockbox works, how can you know that it's a minor set of changes?
22:11:45DethSonewhat do we need to start off with?, a new kernel, maybe a boot-loader (could use GRUB)...
22:12:06gevaertsA new kernel, a new GUI, a new playback system
22:12:12saratoga_a new everything
22:12:15gevaertsSo how is this rockbox?
22:12:18Torneso how about for the kew kernel we use linux
22:12:22Torneand for the new gui we use xbmc
22:12:27Torneand for the new playback system we use ffmpeg :)
22:12:32TorneOh great, someone already did it :p
22:12:37DethSonemost the stuff needed to turn it into an OS is already out there just requiring a few tweaks!
22:12:41Tornethat saves a lot of time.
22:13:41DethSoneokay okay, forget the new OS idea, how's 'bout making a RockBox player for OSs like Ubuntu, Fedora and maybe Windows?
22:13:50DethSonesurely that don't need much?
22:13:59DethSoneI bet that'd look fly!
22:14:01stripwaxDethSone - you mean like Rockbox As An Application?
22:14:11DethSonestripwax: yes
22:14:24DethSonethat's be soo kewl!
22:14:59Tornethe hint there is that this is already implemented
22:15:01DethSoneI'd donate my freakin' bed to that project just to use that application!
22:15:04Torneyou can build rockbox as an SDL app
22:15:10Torneand run it on platforms that support the SDL :)
22:15:13gevaertsOoooh, we get a new bed!
22:15:19Tornepeople don't, because the UI is kinda crappy
22:15:32bluebrother^though wouldn't be more beer for next DevCon more useful?
22:15:53DethSoneno emulator 'n' stuff, an overhaul!, an actually purpose made RockBox media player!
22:16:05stripwax- what?
22:16:13gevaertsWe don't have an emulator anyway, so no problem there

22:17:07stripwaxDethSone - all that new stuff, you're writing that?
22:17:14evilnickWhat would you be in favour of actually keeping?!
22:17:23stripwaxor are you suggesting it would be the existing rockbox code (in which case - that's just rockbox, no?)
22:18:06*stripwax tries to reconcile "a new interface, new menus 'n' stuff" with 'surely that don't need much'
22:18:17bluebrother^definitely not!

22:18:33DethSoneI hate Microsoft, I have no copy of Windows, it is wrong, but I'm guessing a RockBox media player would look something like Windows Media Player, but more yellow and more basic.
22:18:40bluebrother^that's like a weekend of work!
22:18:51stripwaxDethSone - we have a contender for the golden quotes
22:18:52bluebrother^like WMP? Urgh
22:18:54stripwaxmore yellow!
22:18:56*bluebrother^ wouldn't use that then
22:19:03DethSoneXD thank you
22:19:06bluebrother^more beer would be ok, but more yellow?
22:19:10 Quit saratoga_ (Ping timeout: 245 seconds)
22:19:16DethSonestripwax: yeah!
22:19:59stripwaxDethSone - so, a rockbox media player would look something like the existing rockbox application running via SDL, only, not using SDL, and not using the rockbox menus or interface, but something new.
22:20:06TorneDethSone: i think ultimately the point you are missing is that rockbox exists to fill a niche on a bunch of devices that otherwise just unfixably lack a bunch of useful features (trivial usb access, gapless replaygained playback, codec support, etc)
22:20:12TorneNo such niche really exists on desktop computers
22:20:16DethSoneRockBox is like Gamboy Color Pokemon Edition, Yellow, eww, AWESOME!
22:20:28Tornethere are fifty media players already, and many of them support basically the same playback functionality we do
22:20:46Torneour codebase is written from scratch to support tiny devices with serious limitations
22:20:47stripwaxI bet more than a handful have fully customizable UIs already
22:20:54 Quit remlap (Quit: Leaving.)
22:21:15AlexPAlso, there is no capital B in Rockbox
22:21:17Torneyou would do better to find an existing open source desktop media player app and try and get them to add any features rockbox has that it currently lacks, probably

22:21:37bluebrother^guys, please don't make useful suggestions! :P

22:22:35bluebrother^and btw, there is some RockboxOS!
22:22:42bluebrother^it runs on a wide range of players
22:22:47bluebrother^using different architectures
22:23:28bluebrother^there's an installer for it, a manual, an active community :)
22:24:09DethSoneokay okay!, screw the RockBox application/program!, would someone please at-least make a stupid RockBox-like theme for VLC?
22:24:29AlexPAs somewhere else
22:24:39*bluebrother^ doesn't see how a vlc theme is Rockbox related
22:25:11stripwaxDethSone - yep - #rockbox is for on-topic conversation about rockbox - so I suggest if you don't actually want to discuss about rockbox itself, you should probably discuss elsewhere (maybe #rockbox-community)
22:25:19DethSonebluebrother^: relly?!?

23:14:02bluebrother^pamaury: that's great news!
23:15:27pamaurybluebrother^: the code needs a review but basically I wrote some coe that pack several files into the bootloader file, then I moved the dualboot code to tools/ so it's integrated into a scramble-like tool. Then mk*boot just need to unpack the different files and it's done. It works for mkimxboot and I'm still in the process of converting mkamsboot (more complicated)
