02:19:10literal_usernameHi all. I'm a rockbox newb with a clip+ trying to install under linux using rbutil. It seems successful. Yet the device still boots to the OF. Any tips?

03:42:23the-kyleliteral_username: Was your Clip+ in MSC mode before you patched the OF? MTP mode won't work, and for some reason, autodetect doesn't work either.
03:43:45the-kyleAlso, the firmware you need to patch isn't downloaded automatically. You will need to download it manually and use rbutil to patch it.
03:44:52the-kyleOnce Rockbox is installed, you should see a file called clppa.bin on your player. Unmount it and reboot to get the patched OF that will boot to Rockbox.
03:46:02the-kyleIf rbutil shows that the install was successful, you shouldn't need to do anything else. It should boot normally once you have a successful firmware update on the player.
03:48:37***Saving seen data "./dancer.seen"
03:50:29literal_usernamethe-kyle: Yes, it is in force-MSC mode, which is why I'm able to mount it. I downloaded the firmware, and rbutil said it succeeded in patching and installing.
03:50:43literal_usernameclippa.bin does exist on the device.
03:51:00literal_usernamePerhaps I do not know how to reboot it.
03:51:22literal_usernameI've tried using the power button (it says "goodbye"), and then turning it back on. OF boots.
03:51:51literal_usernameI've tried holding down the menu button for 20 secs to force off. Then I hit the power button, and OF boots.
03:51:59the-kyleIs the file on the device called "clippa.bin" or "clippa.bin?" If the file has the wrong name, it won't upgrade properly.
03:52:11literal_usernameclppa.bin
03:52:19the-kyleSorry, is it "clippa.bin" or "clppa.bin?"
03:52:23literal_usernameIt is clppa.bin
03:52:45the-kyleGood. Let the OF do the upgrade and you should be good to go.
03:52:46literal_usernameI mistyped it before.
03:53:05literal_usernameHow do I get the OF to do the upgrade?
03:53:16the-kylePowering it up should work.
03:53:28literal_usernameHow do you reboot it?
03:53:52the-kyleOnce it is unplugged from the computer, just power it off and back on.
03:53:56literal_usernameI've tried the methods described above.
03:54:02literal_usernameThat does not work. OF boots.
03:54:39the-kyleYou may need to set MSC mode again to force it to upgrade.
03:54:54literal_usernameThe device is set to force MSC mode.
03:55:05literal_usernameI don't know how to force an upgrade though.
03:55:16literal_usernameIs that in the OF UI?
03:55:48literal_usernameAFAIK the patched firmware is loaded on the device but not booting.
03:55:49the-kyleNot sure either. It just worked for me. There may be a force upgrade or similar in the system settings, but I'm not sure.
03:56:11literal_usernameI've been through the dialogs on it. If it's there, it's hidden.
03:56:33literal_usernameHow do you reboot yours?
03:56:37literal_usernameJust using the power button?
03:56:49the-kyleYes. Shutdown and power on.
03:56:55literal_usernameHmm...
03:57:07the-kylePowering on is supposed to see the upgrade.
03:57:12the-kyleclppa.bin.
03:57:17literal_usernameIt doesn't.
03:57:41the-kyleDid rbutil give you any errors when patching the OF?
03:57:52literal_usernameNope.
03:58:00the-kyleHmmm.
03:58:43literal_usernameI've tried this about 10 times or so now.
03:59:03literal_usernameInstall, then umount, then power off, then power on. Right?
03:59:14the-kyleMount your player again. You should see a file called upgrade.fin, and clppa.bin should be gone. If this is the case, try just the patch again.
03:59:21the-kyleupgrade.fin
03:59:44the-kyleYes, mount, patch, umount, power off, power on.
04:00
04:00:05the-kyleBe sure that clppa.bin is at the root of your device.
04:00:10literal_usernameIt is.
04:00:13literal_usernameI unplugged.
04:00:20literal_usernameIt's "refreshing your media..."
04:00:31literal_usernamePower off "goodbye"
04:00:38literal_usernamePower on
04:00:42literal_username"Sansa"
04:00:47the-kyleLooks good so far.
04:00:57literal_usernameNo rockbox splash.
04:01:03the-kyleNot yet.
04:01:05literal_usernameIt's a sansa splash.
04:01:11literal_usernameOkay... then what?
04:01:16the-kyleStuck there?
04:01:27literal_usernameIs there more?
04:01:43literal_usernameI'm on the home screen.
04:01:47literal_usernameIt says "music"
04:01:50literal_usernameIt's the OF.
04:02:01the-kyleOK. Now power off and reboot.
04:02:17literal_usernameJust did that, but I'll do it again...
04:02:44literal_usernamePower off "goodbye". Power on "sansa".
04:02:46literal_usernameOF.
04:03:17the-kyleHmm. Are you just copying clppa.bin back to the player each time, or are you patching the OF with rbutil again?
04:03:28literal_usernameI'm using rbutil each time.
04:03:41 Join akaWolf [0] (~akaWolf@unaffiliated/akawolf)
04:03:50literal_usernameI haven't manually altered any of the files on the device.
04:03:59the-kyleHmmm. I'm at a loss at the moment.
04:04:04 Quit Epicanis (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
04:04:12literal_usernameI'm glad I'm not the only one at a loss.
04:04:19the-kyleI can't see anything you're doing wrong that would cause the player not to see your patch.
04:04:20literal_usernameThanks for your help fwiw.
04:04:39literal_usernameMaybe I'll try the manual install method.
04:04:47the-kyleCould help.

04:05:03the-kyleI've done both, so maybe we'll get this.
04:06:31the-kyleOne further question: whenever you mount the player after it reboots into the OF, do you see a file called upgrade.fin in the root of the device?
04:07:24literal_usernameNegative.
04:07:44the-kyleclppa.bin is supposed to be replaced with upgrade.fin if the upgrade is successful.
04:08:11the-kyleThis indicates that something is going wrong with your OF patch maybe.
04:09:13the-kyleTry removing clppa.bin from the device and removing any zip files or bin files you have. Then try downloading the OF again and patching it.
04:12:30literal_usernameTrying once again. The firmware I'm using is http://mp3support.sandisk.com/firmware/clipplus/clipplus01.02.16.zip as linked to from http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/SansaAMS
04:13:14literal_usernamerm'ing .rockbox too from the device before starting.
04:13:56the-kyleYes, this sounds like the right OF. I'm currently looking to see if I can find my version. But I think mine was 01.02.15, but I did see where mkamsboot was updated to support 01.02.16.
04:14:23literal_usernamerbutil reports all success.
04:15:45literal_usernameQuit rbutil, umount, power off device, power on. "sansa" OF.
04:16:01the-kyleBack to the home screen?
04:16:05literal_usernameYep.
04:16:49the-kyleDid it ever ask you for the location of the OF file to patch?
04:16:57literal_usernameYes.
04:17:15literal_usernameIt reported the patch was successful.
04:17:35the-kyleThis is indeed strange. I can't find anything wrong with your installation.
04:17:57*the-kyle Googles.
04:18:08literal_usernameThere is a menu option in the OF UI to format the device.
04:18:18literal_usernameI wonder if that means factory restore, or what.
04:18:49the-kyleIt reformats the filesystem and should restore it to factory specs. Try that and then reinstall Rockbox from step 1.
04:19:04literal_usernameOk.
04:19:07the-kyleI'll still Google to try to find your problem.
04:19:16literal_usernameThanks.
04:21:13literal_usernameWeird that "format" erased neither clppa.bin nor .rockbox
04:21:44the-kyleHmmm. This is beginning to sound like a defective device.
04:22:12literal_usernameWell, it plays music fine.
04:23:33the-kylemkamsboot will reject OF files which were not tested by us. If you try to patch a newer firmware then it supports, it will refuse. Use an older firmware in this case.
04:23:40 Quit factor (Ping timeout: 244 seconds)
04:23:56the-kyleThis from the wiki. But this doesn't seem to be the problem, since it reports the patch succeded.
04:23:56literal_usernameBut won't it report that failure?
04:24:01literal_usernameYes.
04:25:29literal_usernameTried again after "format", same result.

04:26:45the-kyleIt does. That definitely means it isn't performing the update.
04:27:14*the-kyle wonders if it is noticing that the update version is older than the OF that was preloaded.
04:27:18literal_usernameI wonder if they changed the update detection with this version.
04:27:38the-kyleIt may detect the older version and refuse to update.
04:27:42literal_usernameSure.
04:28:01literal_usernameI bet that's what's going on.
04:28:33the-kyleTry downloading 01.02.17a and see if it will patch. I don't think that OF is tested yet though.
04:29:21literal_usernameGot a link for that?
04:29:34literal_usernameI'm not seeing it.
04:30:17the-kyleOn second thought, it can't hurt to try downloading and unzipping 01.02.17a without patching. This would let you know if it's capable of updating to a version that is the same as the preloaded version.
04:30:32*the-kyle will look for a link.
04:31:55literal_usernameNot easily discoverable.
04:32:16the-kylehttp://forums.sandisk.com/t5/Sansa-Clip-Sansa-Clip/Sansa-Clip-Firmware-Update-01-02-17/td-p/279710
04:32:51the-kyleSo apparently, it is possible to Rockbox sansa firmware 01.02.17 using 01.02.16, so that doesn't seem to be the problem.
04:33:12literal_usernameHmm
04:36:37literal_usernameI'm going to try loading .18.
04:36:46literal_usernameHow to do that without patching it?

18:20:10swiftkickgreetings and salutations!
18:21:21swiftkickSo, I'm a user now for several years of Rockbox on various Sansa hardware... e260 originally... now Fuze v1 and v2.
18:21:56swiftkickAnd I'm wondering, what are the latest and greatest devices with micro SD slot, that run Rockbox, that I can still find new in a brick & mortar store?
18:22:35swiftkickI can always go buy another sansa fuze refurb, but I'm wondering if theres anything newer and better.
18:22:56lebelliumI guess you can only buy a clip+ or clip zip brand new
18:23:09lebelliumthe Samsung R0 is a nice discontinued rockboxed device btw
18:23:16swiftkicksure, the clip, tho, isnt that one super tiny?
18:23:58lebelliumyes it is
18:24:04swiftkicknot like I care too much about the form factor but, really, thats the only one left thats still new???
18:24:29lebelliumthere is also the Fuze+
18:24:40lebelliumbut it's a touchpad player
18:24:43swiftkickoh yeah is that finally out of alpha/beta ?
18:24:58swiftkickI see it still listed in "Unstable"
18:25:14swiftkickand I get unstable results from Fuze v2
18:25:53swiftkicki have to double check my two fuze players, but one of them stays in rockbox firmware even after USB insertion
18:25:59lebelliumyes; that means there are some detail to fix and the user manual and/or the installation with the RB utility is not ready. But "unstable" means it's already usable for a daily use
18:26:47swiftkickthe problem with the one staying rockbox firmware is, windows almost never installs the driver for it. whereas if its in sansa mode, it almost always works.
18:27:45lebelliumthe USB on AMSv2 is quite unstable
18:27:54lebelliumbetter use the OF for file transferts
18:29:26swiftkickthanks for the tip. i tend not to use too many flash cards, i just have one that i periodically change.
18:29:36swiftkickchange meaning, delete & repopulate
18:31:59lebelliumwell If I'm not wrong, the only rockboxed devices having a microSD slot are the Sansa Clip+, Clip Zip, Fuze, Fuze+ and Samsung YP-R0. The Fuze and the R0 are discontinued
18:38:06pamaurysome generic rk27xx based players also have a sd slot. The zen x-fi 3 also has one and is rockboxed (though not officially for now)
18:38:43swiftkickhmmm
18:38:49swiftkickyeah I wish that kind of data was on the web site somewhere =)
18:39:21lebelliumjust click on the "builds" link and you get a table with all builds for stable and unstable models
18:39:24swiftkickas much as I loves me some occasional hardware haxing (albeit moreso in the past) its tough to know which players have which chipsets and therefore might be supported
18:40:49lebelliumMaybe the Zen X-Fi 3 should be added on the homepage as unusable port?
18:40:54lebelliumadded to*
18:41:05swiftkickyeah theres nothing "zen" on the dev builds page
18:41:26lebelliumbuild page is only for stable and unstable ports
18:42:01swiftkickbtw the sansa c200 series also had micro SD
18:42:11swiftkickoh wait maybe its the e200 series
18:42:27swiftkickyeah the e200... dunno about the c200
18:44:21pamaurylebellium: I'm waiting to get my zen xfi-3 from bertrik to start hacking it again, it should be pretty much as stable as the fuze+, if not more
18:45:01lebelliumok great :)
18:46:48swiftkickwell thanks for the help guys! I need to run to the bank right now, but maybe I'll put off my purchase of yet another sansa product to find out more about the zen...
18:47:34pamaurylast time I checked the zen x-fi2 is already working more or less but it's an old player

20:10:13bluebrotherwhy do people change existing stuff when adding new strings to a translation?
20:10:55bluebrotherthere are 3 (well, 4 but I've rejected one because of missing realname) german translations in the tracker and every one changes existing strings
20:17:21literal_usernamebluebrother: Thanks for trying to help me out last night. A good night's sleep made my problem obvious. I normally keep another drive mounted, but it's disconnected at the moment. My clip appeared at /dev/sdb (the clip drive) and /dev/sdc (its sd card). I'm accustomed to sdb being the other drive, so I hadn't realized it was the clip. I had been foolishly trying to install to the sd card.
20:17:39literal_usernamethe-kyle: Thanks very much for your help too.
20:18:07bluebrotherok. Good to hear you figured it :)
20:18:14the-kyleSure. No problem. I didn't even think of the drive thing.
20:18:54the-kyleThe one thing I should have mentioned was that it could help to remove the SD from the slot when installing. It can minimize confusion.
