#rockbox log for 2013-01-17

00:00:03[Saint]The keymap is so crowded that it is basically impossible to make a halfway functional target with missing buttons.
00:00:25[Saint]you would need to make some serious sacrifices *and* edit the keymaps for pretty much everything.
00:01:43cougartenSaint o god... to bad :/
00:03:00[Saint]My apologies, but it is next to impossible.
00:03:28 Quit ender` (Quit: Don't take life too seriously; you won't get out of it alive.)
00:03:32cougartengot it for 20 bucks from ebay und just the power button was broken, which i fixed in a minute, but reconnecting this here is a nightmare!
00:04:12[Saint]Yes, they're not really meant to be disassembled/reassembled by hand I don't think.
00:04:51cougartennow i need to find another cheap player. just wanted one to go swimming with and don't want to drown my cowon D2
00:04:53[Saint]I have a Fuze in a similar circumstance, but the only button that doesn't work is << so I can live with it.
00:05:10cougarten:) lucky you
00:05:42cougartenany suggestions for a very cheap player that lasts 4h maybe :) ?
00:05:49cougartendoesnt neet to run rockbox
00:06:15[Saint]Fuze or Clip is probably on the right track.
00:06:37[Saint]the Clip family is cheap-ish, and still readily available.
00:08:42cougartenstill at least 26 eur... hmm. i will have to see. thanks a lot!

02:14:16dfktmaybe the question is moot.. i just converted a flac to "cbr" vorbis, and the bitrate still jumps around in fb2k's display

02:21:10saratogafor a lot of modern formats things like CBR don't really have a well defined meaning
02:21:39dfktit seems that way.. the "cbr (for streaming purposes)" obviously jsut narrows the vbr width
02:21:50saratogamp3 is kind of weird in that it defines a CBR mode but still allows the bitrate to fluctuate by shifting bits between frames
02:22:31dfktweird that aac still has an abr mode as well, next to vbr and cbr
02:22:39saratogai think newer formats don't even really bother with tricks like that and just let the bitrate formally vary rather then lend/borrow bits between frames to give the appearance of a constant bitrate

22:55:45cpt_ramiusit makes no diffrent if i use the utility in disk mode or normal operation mode?
22:56:08gevaertsThat should be the same
22:56:33KatuShouldn't. The first time I installed on my iPod, it was disk mode, and when I reinstalled, it was normal mode
22:56:41Katuthat was a iPod photo though
22:57:18cpt_ramiuscould this be a hard disk issue or is something else wrong?
22:57:22gevaertsDo you have itunes installed? If so, it might be interfering
22:58:16KatuThat's a good call. I remember seeing something about needing to completely close any application which could be accessing the iPod, especially iTunes
22:58:17cpt_ramiusi tried it first without then with and now i'm not using it ... should deinstall...
22:58:29n1sperhaps using a disk imaging program to try to create a raw dump of the hidden partition will tell you if it's an issue with the disk
22:59:27cpt_ramiusi'm trying a check disk...
23:00:26n1sthat will only check the filesystem on the data partition iiuc
23:00:36cpt_ramiusi read something about "allow disk use" setting in itunes or something like that in the forum. but i never found the option

23:02:27KatuAnd yes, I definitely agree. iTunes is a HUGE pain. Just waiting for it to recognize my 4th gen...

23:05:43Katuit simply says "enable disk mode"
23:06:19Katuif you have "manually manage music" enabled, then disk mode is enabled by default
23:07:20Katuonce that is checked, make sure you close itunes by clicking the menu button, then exit. Then verify that it is not running any more
23:08:28cpt_ramiusok... i think the ipod ist seriusly shot... i did not get to the summary window... it rebooted and shut down and than revived into not being connected...
