13:48:01Master_Yogais there some *hidden* secret going on here?...
13:48:18pamaurythis is a technical channel, people only discuss technical matters
13:48:20Master_Yoga...
13:48:33Master_Yogawell, I have a technical problem
13:48:33pamauryand there are not many people working on rockbox anymore
13:48:56Master_Yogawhy is the chatroom full of people?
13:49:18Master_YogaI mean the list on the right −−−−>
13:49:35pamauryso that they can read the log and answer questions if they are pinged I suppose
13:49:49Master_YogaI see....
13:50:08Master_YogaI have trouble with my cowon U3. So who should I ping?
13:50:58Master_Yogait's not directly rockbox-related
13:51:07Master_YogaI bricked the player
13:51:15Master_Yogathere is a tool to unbrick
13:51:24Master_Yogathe tool is made by the rockbox-team
13:51:32Master_Yogait's called tcctool
13:51:42Master_YogaI need help with usage
13:51:53pamauryI know a bit about tcctool
13:52:04pamaurywhat did you do exactly to brick the player ?
13:52:21Master_Yoga*blush*...I....
13:52:29Master_Yoga−−-
13:52:30Master_Yoga...
13:52:35Master_Yoga..I...
13:52:41pamaury(however tcctool doesn't know about the cowon U3 so it might be tricky)
13:52:48Master_YogaI damagd the partition-table
13:53:29pamauryand now it won't boot ?
13:53:38Master_Yogathe tcctool is working with iaudio6...I tried it with cowon u3 and it worked. It loaded an older firmware-version
13:53:51Master_Yogawith the iaudio6-option
13:54:25Master_Yogayes. the firmware is running but it is freezing because the memory is unaccessible (I think)
13:54:50Master_Yogaso it can't load system-files from the 4GB-flash-disk
13:55:12Master_Yogawhen I plug in windows no drive and no partition is showing up...that's the problem
13:55:43Master_YogaI damaged the partition table with linux testdisk
13:56:14Master_YogaI had some corrupted files before. So I decided running testdisk "to fix the filesystem".
13:56:16pamauryI see, that's quite trick then because if the firmware won't boot, it means you would have to upload something else to recover
13:56:19Master_Yoga...this was a bad idea...
13:56:47pamauryand I don't even know what is inside, probably a NAND chip I guess

13:59:00Master_YogaI have a full backup of the flash-memory on my computer
13:59:21Master_Yogaif I could access the memory, I could just reformat it and copy back everything....
13:59:28pamaurywell, the backup is no really the problem here
13:59:37pamaurythe problem is how to access it

14:00:16pamauryespecially since it's NAND, it probably uses a FTL
14:01:14Master_Yogathe incident happened about three years ago...since then...I waited for some possibility to unbrick the player. Now I found tcctool! But just booting an older firmware doesn't seem to be enough though.
14:01:19Master_YogaFTL?
14:01:58pamauryflash translation layer, it is a way to make a NAND chip look like a disk
14:02:03 Join JdGordon_ [0] (~jonno@rockbox/developer/JdGordon)
14:02:17Master_YogaThere is no official repair or anything! Cowon stopped support! You can't even repair a player for money!
14:03:38pamauryjust to make sure, when you boot the player normally, what happen ? It boots but freezes ?
14:03:40 Quit JdGordon (Ping timeout: 246 seconds)
14:05:07Master_Yogayes, it shows the title-screen, reading "iAudio U3 Starting Ver 1.29"...and that's it.
14:05:37Master_YogaUsually an animation would follow, showing the cowon-logo.
14:06:27Master_YogaI guess the animation gets loaded from the flashdisk, usually...as well as the rest of the software

14:07:10pamauryunfortunately, I'm afraid this is going to be near impossible without a HUGE amount of work. People have tried to understand the FTL format (http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/TelechipsNAND) and were not quite successful apparently.
14:07:50Master_Yogaoh no....
14:09:33Master_Yoga...that sucks...
14:09:41pamauryyou really need a cowon tool to fix this I'm afraid
14:09:50pamaurymaybe the firmware has a recovery mode ?
14:10:21Master_Yogahow to find out?
14:10:30pamaurytry holding buttons when it boot
14:10:36pamaurytypically try holding menu
14:10:38pamauryor play
14:11:12Master_Yogawell, I have to hold the menu-button to allow tcctool to access the player
14:11:28Master_Yogait's called external boot or something alike
14:11:45pamauryyeah that's the hardware recovery mode
14:11:54pamaurybut maybe there is a software one
14:11:58pamaury(with another button)
14:13:07Master_Yogaok, I'll try some other buttons. There is: Rec, Menu and the Pause/Play-Button...and of cource the joystick, wich can be pushed down
14:14:03Master_YogaPause/Play is used to switch on the player.
14:14:15Master_YogaPlay and Menu...nothing happens
14:14:33Master_YogaPlay and Joystick...nothing happens
14:14:40Master_YogaPlay and Rec...nope...nothing
14:14:57Master_Yogaplay and joystick-down...player starts as usual

14:18:11Master_Yoga@Link8 I guess you switched the tab or something
14:18:28Master_Yogathis is the wrong channel...only two persons are here
14:18:53pamauryMaster_Yoga: I understand, but what we miss the file to upload to the device to reformat, the thread suggest they have one such file for the D2
14:19:28Master_YogaI think it's just the official firmware
14:19:40Master_Yogadownloaded from cowon-website
14:20:03Link8what tab Master_Yoga
14:20:59Master_Yoganot sure...maybe there is a tab for each channel on the toolbar of the chat-client

14:25:50Link8why
14:25:55Link8i installed it on a windows computer
14:26:40Master_YogaBecause when doing a manual flash with tcctool it's usually the first file to use

22:22:22[Saint]Right. Rockbox Utility can only update an existing install, it can't do an initial install, or remove an existing one, in ipod6g. Rockbox provides no officially supported means of actually booting the binary supplied.

22:50:01[Saint]You could attempt to recover the usable section of the disk with hddscan2.ubi from http://files.freemyipod.org/tmp/hddscan2.ubi but this can take a VERY long time to complete, if it completes at all.
22:50:17[Saint]And, I do mean a very long time.

22:50:32[Saint]the iPod _must_ remain powered during this time.

23:17:58[Saint]not "fixed", no. but there will be a map of current badblocks that rockbox can use to know which sections of the disk to avoid.

23:19:26[Franklin]what if the bad block list is written to a bad block?
23:19:35[Saint]it wouldn;t get written out to a bad block, but, it's entirely possible that it could be resident on one or more future bad bloacks.
23:19:47[Saint]shit happens.
23:20:14*[Saint] notes that this is what he meant earlier when he referred to the disks "suicidal" firmware.
23:20:29[Franklin][Saint]: where's the source for that tool?

23:20:40Link8so if its completed [Saint] i can just reinstall rockbox on it again using rockbox utility?
23:21:26[Saint]you will first need to reinstall emcore, since you just replaced emcore with hddscan2, but, yes.

23:24:13*[Franklin] can't seem to find it in the freemyipod tree
23:24:24[Saint]you can see most of where emcore reacts to the bad block map in emcore/tools/genbbt IIRC.

23:25:42[Franklin]maybe that /is/ the source
23:26:05[Franklin]actually nvm
23:27:23Link8what happends if i reformat the disk again [Saint]
23:27:33Link8will the scan info be lost to emcore then?
23:28:10[Saint]if you format it from within emcore, no. if you format it with an external tool or restore the original firmware, yes.
23:28:26Link8i see
23:29:20[Saint]looking at the source it seems you'll be fucked if the block map doesn't fit in 2052KiB, but, if you blew out that range you wouldn't have very much usable disk left anyway...
23:29:22Link8thanks [Saint] hope this works

23:29:52Link8dont understand what youre saying
23:30:15Link8you don tthink it will have much usable disk left?
23:30:42[Franklin]"if you have a ton of bad blocks, you're screwed, but it won't matter much"
23:30:52[Saint]right, that.
23:31:10Link8why wont it matter much?
23:31:59[Franklin]because you'll have so few usable blocks, you won't be able to store much data
23:32:44Link8lets hope i wont have many bad blocks then
23:33:19Link8so if i click properties on the drive, is there a way to see how much space i can still use?
23:33:28Link8the disc is 160 gb
23:33:33Link8if i click 160 gb
23:33:40Link8will i still see 160gb available?
