00:40:38micahhey, i got a nwz-a17, and am looking at https://www.rockbox.org/wiki/SonyNWLinuxPort#Rockbox −− there seems to be a missing word there, "unzip it at the of your device"
00:40:51micahi guess that is supposed to be 'at the root of your device"?

00:48:52micahsure, but I am not certain that is the missing word
00:49:07micahas it says in red at the top, "do not follow those instructions if you don't understand them, they could brick your device"
00:49:30micaha key missing word could mean the difference between a bricked device and not :o

This happened after I force-removed an SD card while running the OF. Connecting to USB from the OF fails; neither Windows nor Ubuntu can recognise the player.
18:07:09CharlAlso tried to use Rockbox Utility to flash original firmware. Tried to power on/off the OF several times with and without SD card. Sandisk logo displays for ~3 sec and then green screen. Hoping somebody can help.

18:34:28robertd1Charl_ Without the device connected to the usb port and no sd card, after holding on/off button pressed for 30 seconds what does the screen show?
18:34:49Bilgus_but true if he can't boot the rb on the internal it wouldn't work...
18:36:28Charl_Bilgus_: I can boot rockbox (but not OF) from the internal. It's in a read-only state though.
18:40:17Charl_robertd1: It shows nothing; during 10 first seconds rockbox powers on and then off, after 30 sec the device remains off.

18:43:28robertd1Charl_ There is no way of forcing MSC mode by hold the center button while connecting the device?

18:46:47Charlrobertd1: That works (Zip shows up as hd in Windows, rockbox displays logo for 1 sec but then screen is black).
18:48:00CharlBut formatting in that mode doesn't do anything, I tried it on Win10 and Ubuntu. Win10 says "cannot complete format", Ubuntu gives success message but reverts back to same filesystem.
18:49:02 Quit pamaury (Ping timeout: 258 seconds)
18:49:09robertd1Charl you cannot format that way. Windows 10 uses exfat formatting. A silly question, do you have the sansa clip firmware in your pc
18:51:52Charlrobertd1: Not sure what you mean. Do you mean if I have installed the Windows drivers? If yes no I haven't.
18:52:43CharlNot manually at least.
18:53:46robertd1Charl both the windows drivers and the sansa firmware for the device. The problem occured when you removed your sd card from the device?
18:55:33robertd1If I remember there used to be a sansa updater application for the pc
18:55:40Charlrobertd1: Yes, occured when I removed sd card.
18:57:53robertd1Charl if I were you I would try to format the device in ubuntu, fat 32
18:58:17Charlrobertd1: The newest Sansa Updater I can find is from 2009, to old I presume...
18:58:41CharlI tried formatting in Ubuntu already, pretty sure it was fat32.
19:00
19:02:25CharlI'll try it again.
19:03:01robertd1Try with the sansa updater first please
19:08:30Charlrobertd1: Just tried sansa updater (for the fuze, there doesn't seem to be one for zip) but it does not recognise the player
19:08:55CharlTried plugging in with the center button down and plugging in "normally"

19:13:27robertd1Chad in windows explorer can you open your device?
19:14:09Charlrobertd1: Yes, opens like any flash drive. Windows does not seem to label it as an mp3 player though.
19:14:31robertd1is it empty?
19:14:52Charl"3.12 GB free of 7.35 GB"
19:15:34robertd1Charl can you see the .rockbox folder in there?
19:15:42CharlYes.
19:18:03CharlInterestingly, "Properties" for the device lists two Rockbox drivers.
19:18:30robertd1Charl you can try this https://kb.sandisk.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/6675/~/formatting-sansa-players-in-windows-explorer
19:22:58Charlrobertd1: Yes, I have tried that method.
19:24:13Bilgus_Charl can you copy a file to the drive and have it persist a reboot?
19:24:25Charlrobertd1: Nope.

19:26:01Bilgus_ok so here is your options 1: do what johnb suggested 2: open the player and do the recovery method
19:26:39Bilgus_unfortunately I only have a 4g image of the clip+ firmware so I doubt it'll work on your device
19:27:07Bilgus_not to mention option 2 has the potential to brick your device
19:27:39 Join johnb4 [0] (~johnb2@p5B3AFA12.dip0.t-ipconnect.de)
19:28:04Bilgus_so if you can find someone to open up their 8g clip+ and image it in recovery mode you might have a chance
19:29:21CharlBilgus_: I don't want to risk permanently bricking the device, so I'd rather load stuff off of the SD card. And I really
19:29:44Bilgus_then I think that is the option I'd go with..
19:30:00Charldon't know what you mean by 'imaging' and 'recovery mode' (noob here, sorry).
19:30:02Bilgus_Did you say you could get into the OF?
19:31:33Bilgus_https://www.rockbox.org/wiki/SansaAMSUnbrick
19:32:15CharlBilgus_: No, I can't. If I leave the OF on (which displays green screen) for ~1 hour the green screen disappears and the Sansa logo reappears, though the PC still doesn't recognise the player. I've read about people leaving the OF on and player plugged in for hours, which apparantly fixed the problem, but no luck for me.
19:32:25Bilgus_basically you short two pins on the board and it comes up in recovery mode you then make an image of this from a working clip+ and put it on your broken one
19:33:23Bilgus_oh I think you are on the clip zip then sorry
19:33:33CharlBilgus_: Yes, I'm on the Zip. :)

19:34:05CharlThe link doesn't list the Zip though.
19:34:18Bilgus_ok so I think your only option is what johnb suggests
19:35:07CharlWhich was somehow loading Rb firmware off the SD card?
19:35:14johnb4yes
19:35:37johnb4gimme 20min and I will upload a build.
19:35:38Bilgus_basically the way it would work is you let rockbox boot ( the one internal)
19:35:57Bilgus_then you run the new one from the sd card
19:36:02CharlThanks for all your help. :)
19:36:06robertd1Charl in some cases trying to manually update the original firmware solves the green screen problem
19:36:16Bilgus_it does a soft boot which we call ROLO
19:36:33Bilgus_and that would have to be done everytime you start the player
19:37:01Bilgus_robertd1 if the files he puts on don't persist a reboot he won't beable to do an upgrade
19:37:39Bilgus_Charl if you want to try and do an upgrade rather than using the sansa ones do the multiboot bootloader instead

19:43:09Bilgus_exit from there and go to files in the root of the drive are DID.bin and several .SYS files delete all the SYS files and reboot and try to enter the OF again
