11:22:47Genjusometimes it's better to downsize the images after encoding for the player

12:02:28int_mainhey everybody... i've been trying to build rockbox from source in order to add a few patches i really like, but building old versions of gcc and binutils for cross-compilation has been a real problem. gcc's compilation complains about texinfo (and there's no way to disable texinfo), and the wiki seems to have conflicting info on stuff...
12:02:51int_mainlike the wiki says it's best to do arm compilation on gcc 4.0.3, but when i downloaded the v3.15 source, it said 4.4.4 is best
12:05:34int_mainthe shell script also doesn't work, returning
12:05:42int_main/usr/bin/ld: dwarf.o:(.bss+0x30): multiple definition of `do_wide'; readelf.o:(.bss+0x0): first defined here
12:06:05speachyyuck, that info is _way_ out of date apparently.
12:07:00speachyuse the latest source out of git.
12:07:19speachyand tools/rockboxdev.sh will successfully build the toolchain on reasonably modern distros
12:07:36int_maini'll try
12:08:00speachy(there's no good reason to base new development work on top of v3.15)
12:08:21speachywhat patches are you trying to apply?
12:08:29int_mainhttps://gerrit.rockbox.org/r/c/rockbox/+/1200
12:08:40int_mainit's an old patch to add a borderless scrollbar option
12:09:06speachyhmm, that's old enough that it might not even apply to v3.15 :)
12:09:23int_mainit applied okay the last time i compiled rockbox
12:10:28speachywe're using gcc 4.9.4 for everything now.
12:11:31int_mainyeah, i see, the script downloaded newer binutils and stuff
12:11:55int_mainand now it's getting gcc 4.9.4
12:12:03speachyeven before the 4.9.4 bump I put a lot of work into getting the older toolchains to properly build on more modern systems
12:12:07int_mainseems like there's already more progress
12:12:09int_mainthanks a lot
12:13:10int_maini guess y'all are also slowly advancing the version of gcc and stuff as well
12:13:17speachyemphasis on slowly
12:14:22int_maingiven that gcc 4.0.3 (as mentioned on the wiki) is from 2006, 4.4.4 (as suggested by v3.15) is from 2010 and 4.9.4 (as used by the git version) is from 2016
12:14:30int_maini'd say it's not that slow
12:14:44int_mainmaybe someday rockbox could be built on modern-day tools
12:15:55speachywe are using "stock" toolchains for everything but native arm, where we patch the stdlib stuff to disable exceptions.
12:16:24speachy(that's also something that came along for the ride)
12:19:10speachythe main benefit of newer toolchains from our perspective are better diagnostics, especially when LTO is used. (I really want to try getting LTO working, but with our approach to plugins it's a pretty hairy problem)
12:19:45speachybut I've not had a lot of available time for f/oss hackery since the end of last year
12:23:34int_mainooh, it's still going
