06:21:56Xogiumhi folks. I'm curious to know, is rockbox on android still a thing ? All I can seem to find on internet are old dev posts talking about 4.4 or lower. Would have been rather cool if one could replace the android OS with rockbox
06:22:46sporkrockbox never replace android, it is an app on android
06:23:25Xogiumdarn, no fun
06:24:23Xogiumbit weird what I'm going to say but the pixel 6a I was given, I only use it as a music player, and as a blind user I'm getting rather tired of the screen reader on android being so laggy the phone feels less performant than something like an iphone SE
06:25:01Xogiumit's not a thing people with sight are going to experience, but disabled folks sure do. So I wanted to find an alternative and was hoping rockbox was a thing
06:25:47sporkrockbox is definitely a thing, but not a replacement of android. there are dedicated music players you can still buy that run rockbox
06:26:08sporkof course that means spending money, which is not what you might be looking for
06:26:31Xogiumwell, a cheap one should work... Probably
06:26:58Xogiumbut still yes, very annoying that there is no way to completely override android with rockbox :D would have been rather nice
06:29:06sporkreplacing android means writing drivers for all kinds of hardware, it is not trivial
06:29:45Xogiumyeah I figured so :/
06:32:08Xogiumdid embedded linux for a while so I'm aware of some of the challenges. Not all, but some
06:34:06kirvesAxespork, just a wild thought, but... would replacing android with rockbox be possible via a "hosted port" type solution, as in where it technically is an app but the andoird would only be running the most basic stuff and drivers?
06:37:20Xogiumas in keep the kernel and such ? Hmm
06:40:06Xogiumthat was a bit my idea as well, but would still require a whole lot of work I reckon

07:19:54kirvesAxeYeah.
07:21:18XogiumI converted this phone into a music player because my main phone works all good, and a friend of mine gave it to me, so I thought might as well put it to good use
07:22:39XogiumI was very disapointed to still have that gigantic above one second lag when scrolling with the screen reader, every time it has to load up a new screen full of info. I'm sure y'all be driven nut if you had to deal wit this daily
07:24:16kirvesAxeI think phones losing buttons and getting touchscreens in general is one of the worst things to happen to blind people :)
07:24:48Xogiumyes and no. It can be used pretty comfortably otherwise... But typing, specially on android is a nightmare

12:32:44_bilgus__chris_s, does that latest change make it clear enough? I started looking at restoring the previous setting once a bookmarked track ends but thats going to piss off all those that are currently using bookmarks as a way to save th setting
12:34:04_bilgus__then I moved on to saving the setting when changed but that now incurs writing the cfg on every change or carrying around the previous settings till shutdown and adding code to core to write it
12:37:36_bilgus__not that the pieces aren't there to write the cfg I really don't want to split that between the plugin and core, if thats the case I think putting hooks in core (via rb->) would be the better move, Ie have pitch_set handle the cfg entries and saving / restoring
12:44:55_bilgus__I guess with the latter we'd just save the pitch settings on shutdown unconditionally
12:47:59chris_sI thought the manual was fairly clear even before. IMO, it's more a question of whether the behavior is simple conceptually and thus easy to explain? I think "modes" (1: temporary pitch restored by a bookmark that doesn't persist across reboots vs 2: persistent pitch setting) necessarily involve some complexity that we'd want to avoid burdening
12:48:00chris_sthe user with. I'll make another post in the thread with how I imagine a workflow may look like that isn't really helped by the change. Maybe I'm wrong about how I'm imagining that though, since admittedly I don't use the setting.
12:48:00chris_sFundamentally, it seems to make sense to me that when resuming a playlist, you don't see a difference in behavior, regardless of whether the device went to sleep in between.
12:50:22_bilgus__I'm thinking we could just save unconditionally at shutdown to whatever is current
12:50:47_bilgus__the reset menu option makes that not so bad
12:52:25_bilgus__I agree on the you started with a track that altered the pitch you probably want all the tracks after in that pitch so if it shutsdown you would find it odd that the pitch reverted
12:55:31_bilgus__ note{ If a bookmark has changed pitch, on shutdown these settings will be saved and restored next boot}
12:59:09_bilgus__I wonde if I can add it {speed, pitch} to the settings struct but still load and save off a file other than the main config, then I could still take advantage of fixed.cfg to load and not have to write the whole of the settings file
13:00
13:04:18chris_sIs the note even needed? I feel like making it consistent with other settings in that regard doesn't really require an explanation. So it should be enough to mention that bookmarks save/restore the pitch (in addition to playlist/track position, shuffle setting etc).
13:04:46_bilgus__sounds good
13:05:39_bilgus__Its probably good enough to just add it to the settings struct it buys me a lot of nice features
13:06:20_bilgus__the fixed.cfg being the big one
13:11:50_bilgus__is it even worth splitting off the setting to its own cfg file?
13:17:11chris_snot that I'm aware of

14:17:26chris_snot really a new problem, but obviously the impact is somewhat limited if is reset after rebooting anyway
14:19:07chris_sI guess you'll usually notice
14:19:19chris_sdepending on what you listen to
14:33:45_bilgus__thats why I think the reset menu item is important
14:34:00_bilgus__some themes do show current pitch though
14:35:12_bilgus__well I hve most of this patch together but there are still a couple of things that need figured out first, atm I can't seem to get it to load my new setting, either that or its getting overwritten because I'm doing it too early
14:36:02_bilgus__or maybe since I don't actually have i tied to a setting in the menus its ignoring it (but i think its the former)
14:36:51_bilgus__and TWO it currentkly has a way to check if a setting has changed from default and write it if it has but what I need is to only write if its changed since boot
14:38:26_bilgus__rathjer than storing pitch and speed i'll probably have to add a bool SYSTEM_INT (doesn't get save to cfg file) called pitch_changed and set it to true whe the pitch is set by pitch screen or bookmarks
14:39:00_bilgus__anyway gtg I'll continue this eve
