09:25:42dconrad_phonespeachy: I have a feeling it's going to be a while before we can get a rbutil release out, how do you feel about making an obvious note about needing to install manually for devices which need that on the release page linked from the sidebar and on the release 4.0 page?
09:26:19dconrad_phoneI think that not being obvious will cause a lot of confusion for erosqnative users
09:26:56dconrad_phonehttps://www.rockbox.org/download/ that one
09:29:05dconrad_phonesomething to the effect of "these devices still need manual installation:" and maybe links to the wiki?

10:49:00speachyI added that text with a link to the wiki.

14:37:30chorcHello, I'm looking for some pointers how to upload a custom bootloader to ipod video. I've built it and try different flags with ipodpatcher (like -wf, -ab) - no luck, ipod won't boot. Couldn't find anything on a wiki either. Would appreciate any help.
14:38:12chorc(the custom part is just removing booting apple os with hold switch)
14:41:43user890104if you're building it from the master branch, there's a high chance that it doesn't boot, unless someone has fixed it
14:42:22user890104the release bootloaders are built from older code
14:42:54user890104e.g. the ipod video bootloader was last released around 2010
14:43:29chorcI don't think I've seen any changes to those parts, I've checked git log
14:43:48chorcI thought it might be wip for something, but nope
14:44:29chorcuser890104: any recommendations for a branch to use?
14:45:44user890104chorc: try commit 02068ed6cd647a1560da0bb429397342c0cdeb31
14:46:00chorcuser890104: thanks, I'll try
14:47:01chorcbut anyway, what's the correct way to upload it? ipodpatcher -wf build/bootloader-ipodvideo.ipod
14:47:13chorcis that the one to use?
14:52:30user890104ipodpatcher -a build/bootloader-ipodvideo.ipod
14:53:11chorcthank you!
14:53:48chorcokay, turns out it needs whole different set of compilers to build that hash, I have something to do for this weeked :-)
14:54:16user890104try with the release bootloader from https://download.rockbox.org/bootloader/ipod/bootloader-ipodvideo.ipod first, then after you get everything working, try to build that old 15-year commit I sent you, and upload it the same way
14:55:49user890104it might be possible to build it with the current one (gcc 4.9.4) if you have it compiled already
14:56:54speachyfwiw the old arm toolchain won't build on contemporary systems. and it's most likely something is broken due to the 4.9.4 toolchain. _supposedly_ the 9.5.0 toolchain build a working bootloader with the same code.
14:57:32chorcis there like a qcow image that one could use?
14:57:45chorcwe do that at work for older software
14:58:00speachynothing we maintain
14:58:09speachy(And that's not something we want to maintain either)
14:58:17chorcunderstood
14:58:36user890104I have a container with GCC 4.9.4 for ARM
14:59:04user890104https://gitlab.com/user890104/rockbox-dev/container_registry/8055230
14:59:38chorcthank you, I'll give this a shot if current one doesn't work
15:00
15:01:02user890104I use it for the CI jobs in my GitLab fork of Rockbox, so it should be fine
15:01:30user890104well, it's a branch with unfinished stuff, mostly
15:05:07chorcso with that git hash (and some symlinking arm-elf-eabi-* to arm-elf-*) it warns on reconf but makes stops at No rule to make target '/home/dart/src/rockbox/firmware/include/gcc_extensions.h', needed by '/home/dart/src/rockbox/build/bootloader/common.o'.
15:05:44chorcI'll work on that over weekend, thank you all for pointers!
15:05:46speachymake dep first
15:06:01speachyif you're not starting witha clean tree

15:10:13chris_schorc: fwiw, if you *never* intend to boot into the Apple firmware, you can simply use method 4 described here using the  released version of the bootloader, i.e. no need to build your own: https://www.rockbox.org/wiki/IpodPatcher.html#A_4_41_OSOS_contains_only_Rockbox

15:15:04chorcchris_s: omg, this is so much better, thank you! I don't think I'll ever need dualboot feature, so fits me perfectly
15:19:49chorcI think it should be promoted in the manual, or in Rockbox Utility, such a nice feature

15:25:00chris_smay be a good idea, I love how fast it boots up that way.  I probably shouldn't have written "bootloader" above, though, I meant the rockbox.ipod file as described on that page

17:59:57user890104speachy: I'm able to reach the root menu on ipod6g using the new gcc, and uploading a bare rockbox binary, so it's like some background thread (e.g. storage) crashes the whole firmware
18:00
18:00:09user890104but I don't know how to debug these threads
18:00:25speachymaybe somethign in the ATA code.
18:00:39user890104I can connect an UART cable and stream the logs over serial, if there isn't a better way to debug this
18:08:26user890104sometimes part of the display gets corrupted, I've reverted to the old lcd driver and now it still crashes but without the corruption - either to a purely white screen, or it freezes the last drawn screen
18:09:13user890104and since it's crashing at different time, it's something random like disk seeking time
18:09:41user890104sometimes on the splash screen, sometimes splash+statusbar, sometimes on the root menu
18:44:53speachydoing a bootchart build would be handy
18:45:28speachynano2g works fine, and the storage is the main difference between the two
