Thank you very much. That worked.

I did it via USB while Rockbox was running.

I am still wondering why it insisted on updating it everytime I switched
it on. I thought it would only update when needed… but well OTOH how
does it know whether it is needed or not. I could put the SD card into a
card reader while the player is switched off and add, delete, replace or
move files / directories on it.
