You can write in C but some of the startup code has to be in assembler.

No, we haven't gotten that far yet. In fact we don't yet know how to write
things on the LCD. This project just started a week ago. Look at the "research
notes" web page for the current state of our discoveries.

The Archos uses a 12MHz Hitachi SH-1, which is far from powerful enough to do
any realtime MP3 encoding. The Archos Recorder uses a special chip for that
purpose.
