I think everyone has thought about it, but no-one has the DSP experience (or
the correct tools) to implement it.

If someone was going to try to program the DSP, the first project should be
to play (and record) uncompressed audio. Using the recorder to record
uncompressed audio would be a very useful feature, in addition to be a
proof-of-concept for implementing other audio codecs.
