Yes - this is on my fix list. Currently, rename a font like 5x8.bdf to X5x8.bdf and it will work. I'll submit a patch that to bdf2c for this shortly. I've fixed the problem when the font is converted first by ttf2bdf and doesn't have DEFAULT_CHAR.
