What about extending the whole idea to some kind of calender
driven event scheduling thing. Then we could add / remove a
number of timers of differend kinds

- since last user action
- since boot
- at a fixed date / time
- every yyyymmddhhss

These timers could trigger different events like

- start play
- stop play
- shutdown
- wake up (possible?)
- start recording
