I was just about to suggest the same thing. I had a 20Gig player that
wouldn't boot up, unless it was hooked to the USB port.
The old hard drive you put back into it could have just needed less juice to
boot up fully, and that's why it worked?
I would try new fully charged batteries.

probably a little too obvious but are you batteries ok ? Does it do the same
when plugged in through the adapter ?

Have you try to run scandisk on your HD? It might help, who knows...

Sorry. I forgot to mention that I already have done this. I tried RB
1.3/1.4, original Archos 1.27d and none at all, which should result in
1.17i. Didn't help.
