a little, though still linux-specific, workaround is an fstab entry like:
/path/to/file.img /mnt/point vfat defaults,noauto,loop,user 0 0

this allows users to mount and umount it by just specifying the file
image or mount point...
i don't know how useful this is for what you guys are up to though
