You can easily charge the battery using the standard firmware by simply
plugging it in when the power is off. This will boot into charging mode just
like it does already. Otherwise, you can easily use Rolo to switch back to
the default firmware at any time.

I'd try Rockbox, either way. Once you use it, any minor inconveniences it may
have are vastly outweighed by it's advantages.
