Yes i tried. The firmware took 5 to 10 seconds and then returned to the
file screen with the dir still there.

rm -r dir as root on a testing debian said "read only filesystem"...
fsck dumped and mkfs.vfat refused to do it. I had to use
mkfs.msdos -F 32 /dev/sda1
which worked at the second try.

Well it was time to tidy my collection anyways and i did not
loose anything.
