I tried that. I even tried both starting with the wall adapter
already plugged in, and starting from batteries alone. No go.
I always get the same Register Error screen:

Does anybody know how to decode register errors?

I suspect the drive is flaky. My desktop machine doesn't recognize
the Toshiba drive (through the 2.5" IDE adapter) until AFTER a warm
reset. If I power-on cold, the drive just gets ignored.

I tried formatting and partitioning the drive on the desktop machine
and installing it in the Archos again. No change.

I think I'm out of options... Time to exchange the drive?
