Subject: another 8MB upgrade success story

another 8MB upgrade success story

When I changed the harddisk in my recorder to a Fujitsu MHS2060AT (really
recommended, more quiet than Toshiba or Hitachi), the RAM was just facing me,
begging to be upgraded. So I did both mods at once.

The RAM mod took my some hours (because I wanted to do it nice and clean)
with a micro soldering iron under a stereo microscope. No, I'm not doing that
for anybody else, except maybe Björn or Linus.

In principle I followed the way Uwe Freese did (thanks to him!), just
bending 2 pins up. But I didn't route the 2 wires underneath the RAM, no space
there, that would prevent the chip from sitting nice and flat on the PCB. Instead
I went around or directly to the controller. My PCB is again different from
his, so I made a photo:

One hint on how to get the chip: The folks with palm organizers have the
same issue, those can be upgraded with the same chip. Since this kind of mod is
popular, it must be possible to get the chips from some palm sources.

And I'm writing this to encourage 8MB support like RAM size autodetect
within rockbox, or at least 8MB variants of the daily builds. Anyway, thanks to
anybody contributing to this. The Archos feels much better with 8MB, with the
disk spinning up only once per song or even less. A true FF/FR feature with
audio would be more feasible as well, because most of the time the whole song
is in the buffer.

Out for now,
