I use Roloing the firmwares to compare (picking the same pieces of
music). I don't adjust the pitch so that should be ok. It is a bit
confusing as I can get a digital signal from the rockbox but it can only
be heard once altered to optical. Where as the archos firmware is fine
straight from coax. It is hard to know why this is. I am just hoping
someone figures out what the difference between the 2 signals is and
makes adjustments to the rockbox firmware. If not I will have to stick
with the archos firmware :(

Digital connections work great here for me. I use a Sony MD recorder (I
press record with no
MD inserted...) and really like the sound quality.

Assuming your connections are OK (which you can try out be ROLOing the
Archos
firmware) you might want to check out if the file you play back is
recorded in 44.1 kHz
sampling rate and that you have not changed the pitch. Once you change
the pitch,
my MD recorder can't recognize the signal any longer...
