I'm sure they could do that now, as people are trusting. I have uploaded ajbrec.ajz files in the past for people to try out, and people have downloaded them and run them, no questions asked. Any of them could have contained malicious code (but didn't, of course!) The effects of a virus on Rockbox would be limited to trashing data on the unit, and personally I make a personal point of not having anything on Rockbox that I can't afford to lose, or already have a copy of elsewhere.
