Sara,
The root directory is the very first directory that you see when you
click on the drive icon (e: in your case). For the jukebox it should
contain the ajbrec.ajz file and next level subdirectories (or folders if
you prefer), e.g. the .rockbox one (which has been normally created when
you unpacked the rockbox installation file to the e: drive), and the
folders where you have put your music files.

Usually subdirectories or folders do not have an extension (although it
is not actually forbidden to do so). Files usually have an extension,
e.g. .mp3 for music files, .fnt for font files, .cfg for rockbox config
files, .ajz for Jukebox Recorders firmware modules, .m3u for playlists,
etc...).

When powering on, the jukebox looks for ajbrec.ajz in the root
directory, and if not found it will run the firmware which is built into
its hardware. If the ajbrec.ajz file it has found is a rockbox module
you will then be able to "play" any other .ajz file that you might have
anywhere on your disk, either the original Archos module that you have
saved and renamed somewhere (e.g. in the root directory or in the
.rockbox folder), or another level of rockbox if you want to try
different versions.
 
So, to check that you have an ajbrec.ajz file in the root directory of
your jukebox you should simply double-click on the Drive E icon and
check that ajbrec.ajz is visible in the list which is displayed then. If
its size is about 112000 bytes it is an Archos firmware for recorders,
about 131000 it is an Archos firmware for FM recorders, about 200000 it
is a rockbox one.
