Well, after some experimentation trying to power the Archos from an
external battery pack (12V) through a DC-DC convertor to the DC input (9V
nominal) on the Archos, I realized this was just not a very good setup.
The combination of the voltage headroom required of the DC-DC convertor (to
output 9V it needed a 10.3V input, which gave my battery pack little room
to relax) and the (I assume) inefficiency of the archos internal stepdown
convertor gave me very short battery lives (only 8 hours on a 12000 mAh
I was limited to a 12V external battery pack, so I've just moved to an
efficient 12V - 5.4V convertor and tapped directly into the battery leads
on the Archos. It ain't pretty but it does give 3+ days of battery operation.
When used in combination with the record timer patch it makes for a great
long term monitoring device for acoustical studies...
