Have you tried the drivers from this page (2nd block of the page for
you, I think).

I am currently using the same level but for the recorder and I am much
happier than before. And the pre-installer they mention is doing a clean
job especially for replacing old drivers by the new ones.

Also, are you following the recommended operations sequence ?
1. Start the JB to have rockbox take control (and not the built in
firmware) then
2.. Plug the JB on the charger to have max power
3. Plug the USB cable on the JB
4. Plug the USB cable on your (stable) PC

In fact I think the sequence of 3 and 4 does not matter too much, but 1
and 2 are important because the USB drains much power.
If things go better you should then be able to do a restart of your PC
(if necessary) without even touching anything on the JB side.
Note that those latest drivers have the unmount feature which was
lacking before for Win98 (look for the icon in the system tray).
