Some Motherboard chipsets tent to be unstable with USB. I have heard of
(and experienced) a number of instabilities with Via chipsets in
particular. If munging around with drivers doesn't do the job, you might
consider a USB PCI add-on card. Just make sure you can return it, in case
THAT doesn't work.
