Date: Thu, 8 May 2003 11:00:55 -0400 Hi. You Said. Interesting - I suppose these audiobooks are available only to blind people in the US? It depends on the service. Some of them broadcast directly over the SAP channels or FM subcariers, so are available to anyone with a TV or suitable radio. Others send stories over the web, and still others put their readings up in MP3 format. Sorry for going OT. You said. While I like the idea of using small pre-recorded mp3s to announce directory entries, I want full access to menus and the text browser. I'd kill for full access to the menus on the player I have here. Though I know this may not be doable with the player, it would be wonderful if it could be done. The menus aren't bad to navigate, since they don't seem to be circular, so you always know where you are if you hit the correct keys, but speech access would definitely be a plus. I am actually in the process of testing A text to speech engine which will work with rockbox. I don't have time to elaborate further save to say that I have implimented a kind of formant synthesizer (search for klatt or rsynth for more info). I hope over the weekend to have a demo finished for people to download. Someone on the list mentioned "SPEECH" for the BEEB. I remember it well ; I used it as part of a talking word processor for the blind.
