You are right about the code, but that's not what I meant, if he had managed to patent it, it would have been
impossible for anyone else to implement the invention without licensing.

This not only means no one could copy the GPL'd code, they already can't, but that no one could recode it themselves
without licensing. This is much stronger protection than the GPL provides.

I take it that Rockbox itself is under the GPL? Then any derivative
work - and I would imagine that Talkbox is a paradigm example - is
thereby GPL'd... and therefore unsuitable for proprietary
consumption....

Don't have a copy of the GPL at my fingertips, but my recollection is
that the language on that matter is pretty clear.
