A MP3 file doesn't have to start with space, but it normally starts with
space if you encode it as single file. If you split the big MP3 file into
normal tracks _after_ encoding, you get files that don't start or end with
silence. There may be some (inaudible because it's only on the first few
ms) decoding errors because of the bit reservoir if you play them as single
track, but if you play them in the right order, you'll get really seamless
playback with rockbox. The mp3 decoder just reads the mp3 frames from the
memory of your jukebox and doesn't know if there's a file boundary, it just
sees consecuting mp3 frames.
It's not a big deal, just a few extra click during extraction.

Btw. it should be possible to cut away the leading space in existing mp3s,
too, but I have never tried it.
