IMHO not a problem of your archos ! moreover, a problem of your XP installation, PC Hardware or some
USB driver issue....!?
You should try connect other external USB HDDs to your system - i`m shure they will result in a similar behaviour!
BTW: It seems for me, the "badly crash" you describe is your personal opinion of a badly crash. A BADLY crash in windows is a
bluescreen or system freeze - which forces you to reboot your system.
Was it like this and did you need a reboot after the so called "crash" ?
whatever - too late - your archos is gone... ;.-(
