The othelo game was written using static variables, so that you could exit the game, queue up some music (or whatever), and return to where you left off. This is explained in the (now removed) docs. I have yet to even install the new "plugin" code, but I will be surprised if you can still do this - so yes, it is now down to maintaining a disk file, which is gonna slow things down somewhat.
