It's rechargeable, yes. You can't change it because you won't get a replacement anywhere (not from Archos, either). But this shouldn't be a problem. Depending on your mp3s you'll get enough runtime for a whole day and you can charge it over night. I own a jukebox recorder 20 (not a FMR) and put 1800mAh Nimh-batteries in it which can be bought at your favourite electronic shop for a few dollars. I get a runtime of 11 hours with high quality mp3s, with audiobooks you should even get more.
