The FMR must use different cables than the rest, it's a mini-A not an A on the one side. There's an image on this page for reference (and maybe a good lead for me to follow up on):

My local radioshack didn't carry them.

I did find it previously as low as USD $2.95 by searching google for USB
A/A. Note: many places, Radio Shack included, only sell USB A/A extension
cables.

You can get a cable identical (well, longer) to the one supplied by Archos
for the FM Recorder at any radio shack.
