Hmm, I'm about to produce more of such "freak units" by picking 5.08 for my
player flash authoring, if that works. This saves the hassle of providing
different ones for old and new player, people picking the wrong one, checking to
avoid such, etc. So it would be nice if we can change the Rockbox display
check to be smarter than reading firmware version.

Another possibility would be to preserve the version number even if flashing
5.08 over it. Similar to the mask value of the Recorder and FM, I also (have
to) keep that.
