Not all, but I think that play, F2, F3 is a good idea (F1 can be reserved for the menu so people can not lock themselves
out of it), F2 and F3 could have two customization modes:
1) three parameters configuration (like today), where the parameters identities are customizable.
2) one command (e.g. queue).

Before I used rockbox, I preferred the queue mode on the archos, where the play button had a queue-next functionality so I am sure I'll like to have this option.

ahhh, i see. yeah, a programmable play button could work, but if we change it we should make it an
option so people won't get confused. i think it would be just as useful as a normal menu setting,
because you probably wouldn't need to change it that often, but anything in F3 would be more
useful than it is now.

but why stop at play? why not make the whole gui user customizeable?
