Here's what went wrong: (was: Flashing my FM killed it :(

Catchin up again on:
http://rockbox.haxx.se/mail/archive/rockbox-archive-2003-07/0704.shtml

Today I got email from Bernd, who finally found time to sit down on his box.
He now removed the harddisk from the unit and hooked it to a PC, found out
that the flash firmware file was not transferred to disk correctly. Only the
first 6145 byte were correct, the rest was some garbage. He said he forgot to
unmount the jukebox before unplugging it, hence the file error. The plugin
was unharmed, flashed and verified the garbage OK, but of course the box later
didn't like it.

In essence, FM flashing is not more "risky" than with the other models. And
certainly it doesn't depend on the hardware mask value, like guessed at
first.

Since my recent release, the firmware files have CRC checksums. The plugin
is verifying this before it starts, to make shure the file is OK and complete.
So something like this should be impossible by now. Again, recent release is
here:

Now Bernd is doing the serial and UART boot mod, we should be able to revive
it.

Go flashing FMs, too!

Jörg
