OK, full stop on the flame war, maybe we can be helpful instead...

* What flavor of linux are you running (RedHat 7.x/8/9, SUSE, Debian, etc)?
* What does lsmod show...
  a) Before plugging in the Archos?
  b) After plugging in the Archos?
* What does /var/log/messages say when you plug in the Archos? When you unplug it?
  (use the command "tail -f /var/log/messages")
  - IIRC, it said nothing which implies a problem with the USB driver/subsystem
  - Do you have any other USB gadgets (e.g. a mouse), do they work, and what is
      printed in /var/log/messages have messages when you plug/unplug them?
  - Even if the drivers, etc. are not installed or are otherwise buggered, you
      should still see an anouncement in /var/log/messages when the Archos is
      plugged in or unplugged. If you don't, you have a more fundamental problem
      than ide-scsi or usb-storage.
* Have you rebuilt your kernel? If so, are you sure it has USB support?

I'll check my Changelog on my laptop when I get home to see if I did anything special other than the rmmod ide-scsi that I discussed earlier. It has been the better part of a year since I got the Archos and my memory just doesn't work that well any more (too much beer).
