Okay, my $0.02...

Something is terribly screwed up with your USB configuration. I guess
you had an initial (probably trivial) problem, but while trying to
find out/fixing you unintentionally screwed up some none-trivial
things.

For example: the fact that you had to enter a mount for the usbfs
manually in fstab indicates that either your Linux distribution
screwed up, or you didn't install all of the necessary USB stuff
(which IMHO also indicated a distribution screw up).

If you have a Linux version that is package based, you might check all
kernel and USB related packages, and reinstall them if necessary.
