Or, the strain relief where the cord meets the male headphone jack is really bad. You'll recognize the wire separating from the connector from the slight cut-outs that you describe, or from the bass getting scratchy or muddy. Dunno if you've tried this or not, but check with another pair of headphones before blaming the jack!
