i changed my archos batteries for some 2100mah batteries and i observed the
same sudden drop in battery level, which led to me to investigate
further. then i read FAQ question 71 and felt like a big dummy!

of course the answer was i was transferring huge amounts of data to and
from the jbr20 (i was using it to move files between my home computer and
my office computer) and the big disk transfers were draining the batteries
prematurely. i'm a little surprised to learn that adapter + usb isn't
enough to keep the batteries from draining, but now that i know that that
is indeed the case, i won't worry about having accidentally "ruined" my
batteries through overcharging!

oh well, i'm a dummy for not having read the FAQ more carefully (i did look
at it but somehow that particular bit of info did not "stick"). on the
plus side, i learned how to change the batteries in my JBR20, and now i
have some really nice 2100mah cells in there.
