Thanks for Mike Holden's note about the source showing that -52 showing it
to be a HD read error. Might be nice to have a list of the error codes
available on the website. I am also very glad to hear that you have only
heard of 1 or 2 that had a failure from not flashing correctly. With more
testing, I am no longer able to get the unit to boot up. Nothing will allow
it to boot, including the F1 startup, full charge of batteries, 2 other
fully (external charger) charged sets of batteries, using or not using the
AC adapter, nor if plugged into USB mode because the drive is not seen by
Winblows.

Linus/Jörg thank you VERY much for your thoughts (and for the amazing
Rockbox--which I am glad I contributed $30 to), I am not able to boot it to
format /U or scandisk it. It was not at all hot, nor did it have the
pronounced read/write arm drive clicking noise that it makes now.

Mainly, I wanted to know if this was unrelated to flashing the firmware, and
it sounds like it is not. The only thing that originally made me wonder
about the hard drive vs. flashing was that I know the difference in external
HD USB-2.0 vs. 1.0 speeds, and this was working much slower than expected.
I bought two of these from Amazon, and now this 2nd one is transferring at
the fast speed of USB 2.

To close the chapter on this, I am glad I can return it to Amazon since it
has the Rockbox firmware and software stuck on it. It's in the box to
return, awaiting arrival on Wednesday of the new replacement.

One last question to anyone who knows. What does the flashing of the
firmware actually accomplish other than faster bootup time? I now see the
only downside to flashing may be if you later need to return to Archos, and
cannot get into the unit to restore the original Archos Crapware (which I
saved a copy of--right down to the horrible few songs they installed--if
anyone needs a copy of them let me know.)
