No. The wall wart cannot supply enough power to spin up the drive. The
batteries have to help.

I ran into this with my new Recorder last week. I left it on charge for a
couple of hours and then started copying over the files from my other
Recorder. I started getting a very occasional "delayed write failed" error
from windoze. It finally dawned on me that the new recorder still contained
the garbage factory batteries. I installed a set of good 2100 mah batteries
and the problem was solved.

I put the garbage batteries in my fast charger just to see what happened.
Just like the same type batteries from my other recorder and from my Studio
10, they got very hot very quickly and failed to take any charge. They lasted
less than 5 minutes in my battery tester. Into the garbage they went, just
like the other two sets.

Anyway, the point is, if the HD cannot get enough power and the voltage drops
to some threshold, then a wide variety of illogical error messages can result
as the drive electronics effectively go into a dying quiver. Give it enough
juice and all is well.
