I think you should first try to plug the HD in a PC to see how it behaves and if it can be formatted.
You should not plug it via USB though, but directly into a laptop or other PCs with interfaces compatible with small sized HDs.

If the disk proves still to be functionning then you would avoid spending $105 ;)
