I was also having more luck accessing mine on a windows ME computer.
I think that if power or the HD is not up to par, win98 is more likely to
experience problems.

It works all right on my computer at home, so I assume that my Archos is OK,
but it is not "completely" recognized by the machine to which I'd like to
transfer at the moment.
