For a really good example, look over at http://www.research.att.com/projects/tts/demo.html is the bell labs text-to-speech (TTS) synthesizer. Very nice. Bunch of other references at http://www.ieee.org/organizations/history_center/sloan/ASSR/speech_synthesis_sites.html

Listern to their wav sample, it's pathetic:
I don't understand anything.
BTW, I know the mentioned phoneme chip, once I had this tied to my first
computer, called Dragon, the european clone of the Tandy ColorComputer (CoCo),
if anybody remembers. (Do you see any connection to my nick?)
I found the chip useless still at its time.
