It is possible that you got the polarity reversed, if your charger came with
one of those reversible tips, like the radio shack ones do.

The ability of the charger to supply more current than required would not
have caused the problem.

It is no different than plugging in a stereo to a wall outlet that is rated
for 15A or 20A. That is the max current.

It seems you must have not had the correct voltage or polarity to cause
those circuits to lose their magic smoke. Even being an EE I
have never had much luck getting smoke back into electronics to make them
work that must be done at the factory for those discrete
components.

You will likely have to replace some parts to enable the charging circuit.

Does Archos offer a repair service? Is it a flat rate?
Surely it is less than the cost of replacing the unit....

I used the standard 9V Voltage. The Adapter is capable of 800mA, but the
Archos only need 500mA - could this be a problem?
Of course I unplugged the box. It's still booting up and playing - but I
cannot charge it anymore....
Finding an electronic engineer will be hard. And finding the broken part
probably even worse.....
