VCR will download at network speed if the server will permit, instead of real time. A 3 hour show can be had from an archive in just a few minutes. Being able to download multiple streams means one can get several shows that come on at the same time. Or where archives are offered, download a week's worth of shows anytime it is convenient. Then there is the matter of network congestion and other things that cause drop outs. VCR doesn't care because it is simply capturing a data stream. If the stream stops for a few second VCR simply waits. TR will, of course, record silence during that interval because it IS only a virtual tape recorder. If you're happy with TR that's fine. Some of us are a bit more demanding and VCR fills that need.
